Magento to Shopify migration, led by someone who knows Magento inside out
Magento to Shopify migration consultant in San Diego. I led Event Network's Magento 2 to Shopify migration and handle data-model mapping, SEO redirect maps, ERP/POS integrations and cutover.
Moving from Magento to Shopify is one of the most common replatforms in eCommerce, and one of the easiest to underestimate. The two platforms model products, customers and URLs differently, and the risk sits in the details: variants that don't fit, redirects that were never mapped, an ERP integration nobody documented.
I'm a Magento to Shopify migration consultant and senior Magento 2 developer based in San Diego. I led Event Network's move of its museum and zoo storefronts from Magento 2 to Shopify, and I've moved other merchants from Magento to Shopify before and since. I know what's inside a Magento install because I've spent most of my career building them.
When moving to Shopify is the right call
Not every Magento store should move. Shopify is usually the better home when the business wants merchandisers to run the store without a developer for every change, when hosting and upgrade costs have grown faster than revenue, and when the catalog and checkout fit Shopify's model with apps or light customization.
Staying on Magento or Adobe Commerce often makes more sense for heavily customized B2B, complex pricing, deep multi-website setups or catalogs that depend on Magento's flexible attribute model.
The deadline makes the decision urgent for many merchants. Standard support for Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 ended on August 11, 2026, and extended support ends on August 31, 2027 (Adobe lifecycle policy, last checked Sep 25, 2026). If you're on 2.4.6 or older, you are choosing between an upgrade and a replatform either way. I do both, so I have no reason to push you toward one.
What a migration covers
Catalog and data model. Magento stores product data in an attribute-based (EAV) model with attribute sets and store-view scoped values. Shopify has products, up to three options per product, variants, metafields and metaobjects. Configurable products become products with variants, bundle and grouped products need a deliberate decision, and attributes that drive filters or content have to land somewhere Shopify's theme and search can use them. Shopify has been raising its variant limit beyond the long-standing 100 per product, so large configurables that once had to be split may now fit; I check what your plan and apps support before we design around it.
Customers. Customer records, addresses and marketing consent come across. Passwords do not: Magento password hashes can't be imported into Shopify, so customers set up their account again through an activation email or sign in with a one-time code. That needs a plan and a message, not a surprise.
Order history. Past orders can be imported so customers see their history and your reporting keeps its baseline, without re-triggering emails, payments or fulfillment.
SEO redirect map. Shopify uses fixed paths such as /products/ and /collections/. Every Magento URL that earns traffic or links, including URL rewrites and category paths, needs a redirect to its new home, ready before DNS moves.
Integrations. ERP, POS, 3PL, marketplaces and payment flows are rebuilt against Shopify's APIs and webhooks, and tested with real orders.
Cutover and hypercare. A rehearsed launch with a content freeze, a final delta sync, redirects live and a DNS switch, followed by close monitoring of orders, integrations and search traffic.
Why hire me for it
- I led the company's move from Magento 2 to Shopify, covering data-model mapping, the SEO redirect map, integrations and cutover, and I led a team of about 5 developers on 18 storefronts.
- I built and maintained the ERP and POS integrations that kept in-store and online inventory, orders and fulfillment in sync, so I know what breaks when you move them.
- I've led development of 18 Magento 2 storefronts and done Magento work since 2012, so I can read your install and tell you what it actually does.
How it runs
- Audit. A migration discovery audit of your code, extensions, data and integrations.
- Plan. Data map, redirect map, integration plan, scope and order of work.
- Build. Theme, apps, integrations and repeatable data-migration scripts, tested against real data.
- Launch. Rehearsed cutover.
- Hypercare. I stay on after launch until the store is stable.
Questions
Will we lose our search rankings? Not if the redirect map is done properly and in place before launch. Every URL that earns traffic or links gets a 301 to its closest new equivalent, and hypercare includes watching crawl errors and search traffic.
Can customers keep their passwords? No. Magento password hashes can't be imported into Shopify. Customers re-activate their accounts or sign in with a one-time code; the migration plan includes how and when they're told.
Can our order history come across? Yes. Historical orders can be imported so customers and your team keep the history, without sending emails or triggering payments and fulfillment again.
We run several Magento websites. What happens to them? Magento's website / store / store-view structure maps either to Shopify Markets inside one store, for different countries, currencies and languages, or to separate Shopify stores when catalogs and teams really differ. Which fits is one of the first decisions in the audit.
Can you work as a contractor for our agency? Yes. I'm available now for contract work, including as an Adobe Commerce contractor or migration lead inside an agency team.
